We had dinner here on the evening of Friday 1st May 09, while driving to Inverness.

My wife and I each had the set meal, three courses, at £27.95, with wine and a supplement or two, a bill for dinner for two of just under £75. Not cheap. The quality of the food was mixed, in fact, I've never encountered such a mixture of good and bad in one meal. Sometimes there were both extremes on the same plate.

Of six plates, only two were straighforwardly good ... my wife's lentil soup, and my main course of salmon on a leek and potato cake. My starter of fishcakes was two blobs of soggy mashed potatoes with a bit of fish and crab, browned on the bottom, and served with a salad dressed in the worst dressing I've ever tasted, lardy and unpleasant. My wife's main course came with home made chips that were inedible, though the steak and carrots were good, and the roasted onions excellent. My dessert of cheesecake came with a delicious ginger and rhubarb topping over a base that varied from biscuit thin, to virtually the full thickness of the slice, I was left with a large, rock-like lump on the plate, completely inedible. My wife's torte was similary dry, hard and lumpy, though the sorbet served with it was delicious.

Service was slow, and attempts to catch eyes were studiously avoided. When asked right at the end how the experience had been we responded just as above; the response was a rather surprised 'Oh', and that's all.

But by this time the worst part of the evening had already unfolded. We had seen the proprietor preparing a large table, setting wine to breathe. We assumed a booking had been made by a party of guests. Instead, very loudly and ostentatiously, the owners seated themselves, together with younger and older family. Service in the rest of the restaurant came to a complete standstill for several minutes while the family were seated and their orders taken.

When we commented brieflly about our unhappiness with the food, it was clear that the proprietors were listening in, but they made no comment, simply directing frosty looks at us as we left.

All in all, very poor value in terms of the quality of food, but perhaps the most appalling display of bad manners I've come across from proprietors of a hotel or restaurant anywhere.
